A
TRULY MAGICAL NIGHT!
_____________________
Yes,
it was a truly magical night that wouldn't
have been possible without the help and
cooperation of everybody, including the
performers:
The
"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" Feminists.
All that nervous energy and reckless abandon
thrown in for a definitive version of
that song. Nicely accented touches
on by Allyson on both that song and "Sussana's
Still Alive"on vocals and keyboard.
Tim"Sunny
Afternoon" Readman armed only with his
voice and guitar, soldering through that
fine tune, as well as 2 other smartly
plucked gems: "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion"
and "Death Of A Clown".
Geoff "Waterloo Sunset" Berner bringing
a Klesmer-punk flavour to what some consider
their best tune, and adding his own embellishment
to "Stop Your Sobbing", adding "I'll give
you something to sob about!"
The Beekeepers'"Here Come The People In
Grey" Dave Dawson performing one of more
forgotten Kinks tunes from "Muswell Hillbillies", "Rats",
as well as one of Ray Davies' quirkiest
songs "Lazy Old Sun", and illuminating
the evening with tales of the notoriously
bad relationship between the Davies brothers.

Bocephus
"Nothin' In This World Can Stop
Me Worrying About That Girl" King.
He gave the proceedings his
usual smarty-pants comments: "Hermans
Hermits are one of my favorite bands....No
seriously, the Kinks are my favorite
band, alphabetically, after ABBA" He
also gave his shouting best through
"State Of Confusion" and "Come Dancing",
which were also shown on the
big screen, set up in the club,
shortly before and after he played
them. Odd timing, not planned at
all.

Willy "Dead End Street" Krueger for
piecing together a killer band which included
Declan and Adam from surf-band Orange Whip, Jen
Mold on keyboards and Andy from Trenchant and
other such inspired combos.
Andy
"Apeman" Collins was in good voice in a jovial
reading of one of the most happy-go-lucky
Kinks kuts. The cello player was a fine
addition, giving an especially different
slant on "All Day & All Of The Night"
|
SK
"Picture Book" Robot sounded so much like
the Kinks recording, you couldn't tell
the two apart. Kevan's witty aside about
doing a Wings Tribute night only added
to their magnificent performance. Couldn't
get the "bop be be bop bop...ba ba ba.."
out of my head with another finely executed
rendition of "David Watts"
The
"Village Green Preservation Society" Tomorrows
gave it a new lease on life with a more
rousing electric treatment. I'm rather
relieved Marc and Scott didn't go through
with the fake argument on stage. They
were using other bands equipment

The
"Brainwashed" Orchid Highway brought their usual
jump-start punch to this very overlooked Kinks
rocker. I think Blur blatantly ripped it off
years later ,but, then imitation is the greatest
form of flattery, isn't it? They even covered
"Australia", a second from the "Arthur or The
Decline & Fall Of The British Empire" album.
Not an easy one to pull off ,but, that The
Orchids did.
Star
"Lola" Collector definitely did this song justice,
as they did reving up "Do It Again", complete
with leaps and highkicks to punctuate one of
Ray Davies' most instantly catchy numbers,
capping off a comeback in the 80's.
 |
|
Craig
"Tired Of Waiting" Jacks who provided
the biggest surprise of the night
as his much-more Alt-Country leanings
may have clashed with something
as English as The Kinks. Evidently,
it only enhanced the songs. Him
and John Shepp went for broke on
"Victoria", knowing how to get the
most out just two players.
I think Craig was born to scream
"Victoria".
So
there you have it! 12 acts who all
kicked ass! Vintage Kinks Video
crammed in between and a most magical
night no-one is soon to forget!
