Friday, August 1st
I.M.U. presents NINJA
SPY w/ special guests The WHITEBOARD
PROJECT (Nanaimo) @ The Bourbon,
50 West Cordova . Early show 8-11pm
sharp / Tix available directly via
the bands or purchase
advance tickets online HERE!
NINJA
SPY's original contagious
and emotive "Skankore" hybrid
of Hardcore mixed with Funk/Ska/Reggae
is created by three brothers
in constant battle with the
Triad of MI (Monotony / Indifference,
Malice / Intolerance & Materialism
/ Ignorance). Their music traverses
extremes and draws from genres
including post hardcore, ska,
grunge and reggae. Infusing
funk and groove with heart-pounding
double-kick and guttural screams,
this "Triad in Blood" draws
the attention of musicians and
music listeners alike.
The
WHITEBOARD PROJECT
- The Vancouver Island based
three-piece known as The Whiteboard
Project began in late 2006 when
Paul Jacobs (guitar/vocals)
and Jeff Laired (drums), having
never played together before,
reluctantly agreed to fill in
for the overly inebriated band
that was supposed to perform
at a friend's party. |
|
Their musical connection was immediately
obvious, and within a short while
they had a bassist and a weekly rock
jam at a local club, then they moved
onto playing gigs at local clubs and
all-ages events. The band's original
and distinctive alternative progressive
hard rock combined with their intense
live shows have garnered them a dedicated
fan base that is relentless in its
efforts to support the band.

the band is currently supporting their
most recent release "TUMACO", recorded
and produced with Loverboy's Vic Lavek.
TROPHY
WIFE put the mental back in
instrumental, combining shredding
guitar solos, funk bass, Latin rhythms
and jazz-classical piano into a contagious
blend that has garnered fans at venues
like The Roxy, Media Club and Bourbon.
Comprised of the world's most unsung
guitar hero, Louie Anyos, the world's
funkiest white boy, Darryl Greer on
bass, and the world's hairiest, most
rocking drummer, Pablo Stolowicz.
Trophy Wife is prog-rock in its most
virtuosic and shamelessly entertaining
form. Foregoing a singer to steal
all the glory for themselves, Trophy

presents The
FLAIRS, The SAINTS COLLAPSE, I EMPEROR
& WAR OF THE MINDS @ PUB
340, Cambie Street / Tix available
directly via the bands or purchase
advance tickets online HERE!
The
FLAIRS are taking the
world by storm with edgy, high
energy pop-punk that harkens
back to the days of '70s punk
and '80s hair metal, sweetly
flavoured with honeyed vocals
over frayed power chords and
frenzied beats. Featuring former
members of Tuuli and Bif Naked's
band, their latest CD "Shut
Up And Drive" skillfully blends
youthful spirit and undeniable
talent, unleashing thier original
sound on an unsuspecting public
hungry for living, breathing,
punk-coloured hard rock with
smart pop sensibilities.
With success in the Far East
and opening spots with INXS,
the sky's the limit for this
talented hard-rocking quartet!
The
SAINTS COLLAPSE (formerly
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY) are a
group of silver-tongued devils
out to worm their way in to
the proverbial undergarments
of the music industry. Featuring
former members of This Week
In History, Rakshasa and Burn
Project, this local A-Team delivers
appealingly catchy songs created
with unusual combinations of
instruments and experimentation.
|
|
Paired with the on-stage antics
of a band let loose, this is what
you wished you had found every time
you've been disappointed at a live
rock show... a REAL danger-fueled
rock'n'roll show!
I,
EMPEROR - Blistering, melodic
nu-metal with aggressive, guttural
vocals, inventive songs structures,
a tight rhythm section and tasty,
hook-laden downtuned guitars that
will appeal to fans of Tool, Pantera,
Soundgarden, Faith No More & Our Lady
Peace.
WAR OF THE MINDS can do things
mere mortals can only dream of — playing
instruments with three hands at once,
singing with forked melodies, winning
music competitions held on other planets,
and transfusing their potent musical
elixir into your bloodstream with
a thrilling combination of intense
guitars, commanding vocals, inventive
bass and rollercoaster drums. Their
riff-heavy music is dynamic and contagious
with a darkly grooving edge, bridging
epic guitar rock with female-fronted
psychedelia into an explosive new
sound.

MEI & YOU BRIGHT MINDS, FIRST
TIME VICTOR, LISA JOYCE PARRY &
The SUMNER BROTHERS (Duo) @
The Media Club, 695 Cambie . Doors
8pm
/ Purchase
advance tickets online HERE!
 |
FIRST
TIME VICTOR - Influenced
by Mr Cyclopede, quantum physics,
Captain Caveman, coconuts, First
Time Victor distills a brand
new mix of grooves, resulting
in a Jambalaya of original sound
that has the crowds on their
feet, dancing wildly to their
bouncy Afro-Caribbean grooves!
MATTHEW
MEI & YOU BRIGHT MINDS
- Having traveled the world
as the son of a preacher man,
Matt's initial introduction
to the world of music was his
dads classical, old blues and
folk records, but it was his
struggles in life and his soulful
growth that fueled his desire
to write emotional and heartfelt
songs. Matt teamed up with Jonathan
Anderson (Jonathan Inc.) at
Buena Vista Studios to create
a thoughtful album that showcased
some of his favorite songs he
had written over the years.
Joined by his band, You Bright
Minds, Matthew and the band
deliver solid up-tempo bluesy
rock'n'roll, that has a few
visits from groove based hiphop
and on the blues end, serves
up sweet country rock influenced
slide guitar licks with soulful
vocals. |
LISA
JOYCE PARRY's stripped down
approach has its roots in her love
of beat poetry, mod music & fashion,
old school country crooners, kick-ass
rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock,
and all things East Van! Mixed with
her love of vintage guitars, red wine,
kitty cats, Morocco, India & pretty
dresses, her style approaches an emotionally
charged, uniquely-vibed style that
she can call her own.
The
SUMNER BROTHERS have garnered
an incredible amount of attention
in the short amount of time they have
been a duo. Mixing originals and covers
into a laid-back country-Delta-blues-roots
blender, they float between traditional
country, blues and folk, with a dash
of bluegrass thrown in, making for
a very tasty musical recipe. Described
as "Old Crow Medicine Show meets the
White Stripes", their rockin, foot
stompin, rustic-roots sound has been
favourably compared to Stompin Tom
and Johnny Cash. Come out and see
why Samantha Parton of The Be Good
Tanyas calls them her "new favorite
band".

BREAKFAST - After almost
2 years of living in self-imposed

mention helping the orphans)
-- the surf rock cowboys of
HOT BREAKFAST are back in the
West and ready, both physically
and spiritually, to rock you
like the proverbial hurricane.

JOSEPH BLOOD
&
The HOUNDDOGS &
guests @ The Bourbon, 50 West Cordova
. Early show 8-11pm sharp - Purchase

PENDER
is the musical equivalent of Neil
Young's Crazy Horse and Wilco having
a potluck with Nirvana and Evan Dando.
A gathering of influences of country
through punk rock, 80s synth to brit
pop beats and a side of grunge for
good measure served on unpretentious
white paper plates. Named after the
Vancouver street that's a backdrop
for their musical and non-musical
fun loving debauchery, vocalist Chris
Kelly, guitarist Ryan Ogilvie, drummer
Brett Galliford, keyboardist Lara
Farcasan and bassist Derrek Kittson
sizzle through a casual set that turns
any scene into a fun party, combined
with a sense of earnest vulnerability
uncommon in today's modern rock.

whose substantial imprint has been

various incarnations on guitar and

I.M.U. presents LIONS
IN THE STREET, GRASS CITY, WAR
OF THE MINDS &
DUKES OF THE ARCHIPELAGO @
The Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir
 |
LIONS
IN THE STREET create
rock'n'roll that is fierce and
genuine, invoking vintage Stones
swagger and raunchy boogie rock
'n' roll with lean attack and
ass-kicking rhythmic sense.
Formerly known as The Years,
the Lions have shared stages
with the likes of Jet, Kings
of Leon, Ambulance Ltd, The
Dirtbombs and The Zutons and
"explode with a Stones/Small
Faces onslaught that drips with
jubilant passion, as well as
very loud guitars played with
giddy abandon" (Guitar Player
Magazine). Michael Corcoran
of the Austin American-Statesman
extols the Lions as being "the
first great band I saw this
year at SXSW!"
GRASS
CITY is a cathartic,
foot-stompin' jug of musical
moonshine -- soul-stirring Southern
Doom Blues of the highest order.
Their live show is a bruising,
head-thrashing, tear-jerking
experience that bulldozes the
audience into heavenly oblivion
with a thick Skynyrd-esque three-guitar
assualt, scratched whiskey vocals
and a Sabbathian worship of
the Riff. |
It sounds like rock and roll savin'
your soul, the sound of meat hittin'
the grill. It sounds like goddamn
GRASS CITY!
WAR OF THE MINDS can do things
mere mortals can only dream of — playing
instruments with three hands at once,
singing with forked melodies, winning
music competitions held on other planets,
and transfusing their potent musical
elixir into your bloodstream with
a thrilling combination of intense
guitars, commanding vocals, inventive
bass and rollercoaster drums. Their
riff-heavy music is dynamic and contagious
with a darkly grooving edge, bridging
epic guitar rock with female-fronted
psychedelia into an explosive new
sound.
DUKES
OF THE ARCHIPELAGO play fervent
rock and roll, fiery lamentations,
drunken hymns. They write songs with
the heart of the forest floor and
play them with the frenzied soul of
the city. The combination of traditional
folk-based songs with the explosive
Energy-excitement and unpredictability
of their live performance creates
the sound that they are quickly becoming
known for. A year and a half worth
of playing together has given them
a strong sense of what they are musically
and where they are going.
